Sculpture
This sculpture workshop was a group work project. Each group was given a painter to investigate to act as a source of inspiration. The first mission was to select a painting by that artist to help the group instigate ideas to make a sculpture. We researched the work of Mainie Jellett. Jellet (1897-1944) is an Irish painter. Her companion was Evie Hone, another female artist of the same generation. They decided to move from Dublin to Paris to explore the world of art where they encountered Cubism and began an investigation of non-representational art. Cubism was rife at this time in Paris. The movement was pioneered by artists such as Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. In Cubist artwork, objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Our response to Jellet's work was through a minimalist, abstract installation.
